Location: V&A Waterfront

Today was our second day onboard, and a long one! As skipper, my job was to wake everyone by 7:00 am for a 7:30 breakfast, but everyone was up by 6:00 due to jet lag and a restless first night’s sleep aboard Vela. All before breakfast, Alexa, Camilla, and I each got stuck in one of the heads! I had to be rescued by Mac and Perry! Now, all the headlocks have been fixed, so hopefully no one else gets stuck! This first morning on the board definitely proved we have a lot to get used to by living on a boat.

Today, Kyler was in charge of our meals with Vittoria and Henry as sous chefs, and cooked us delicious smashed avocado, English muffins, and eggs with sriracha hollandaise for breakfast and Greek salad for lunch. This fueled us up for a morning of program policy review and boat walk-throughs, and an afternoon of station bills. We learned how to respond to a man overboard, with Sam and Emma teaching us how to pull a person back on board using the 2-6 method. We also learned how to use a trash pump to put out a fire. We got through all the material pretty quickly, and were able to have some free time to explore the V&A Waterfront between learning all the material. On the way back, Hannah K. fell off the fender trying to get back onto the boat and took an unplanned swim!

For dinner, we had a delicious pasta dish that made the entire boat smell amazing, and did our daily appreciation wrap-up. After cleaning up dinner and sweeping down Vela, we were able to end this very busy but fun day with ice cream at the Waterfront. The rest of the evening was spent playing card games in the salon and winding down after a long day of protocols and drills.
