Location: Cape Town, South Africa

Today started with me waking everyone up for breakfast, a chia pudding which was new to me, and had a very unique texture. After breakfast, we all had a short debrief on the academic policies before heading off for the first of many excursions to come, Robben Island, the island where Nelson Mandela was held captive. A short ferry ride later, we arrived and hopped on a bus tour around the island. We stopped and had an amazing view of Cape Town with Table Mountain in the background, and were able to see some Cape penguins, native only to Africa. The next part of the tour was inside the prison, where we were led by a former prisoner who told us about his experience in the prison. Once we finished up the tour of Robben Island, we headed back to the boat to get a more in-depth introduction to each of the courses we will be taking over the next 90 days. Right before dinner, Perry yelled down to the salon that there was a Mola-Mola “Sun fish” which is rare to see in the marina. We all ran up and were able to catch a glimpse of it before it disappeared. For dinner, Emma made Jenifer Aniston salad while Reed and Nashota worked on de-shelling the pistachios. After dinner, we enjoyed Reed’s guitar and magic tricks, and Kyler made cookies for everyone.
