Location: Soufriere, St. Lucia
We awoke this morning to the sight of the magnificent Pitons looming overhead and watched the sunrise over the peaks as the local fisherman rowed by on their way to catch bait for the day. Breakfast was quick, so we could head over to the SMMA (Soufriere Marine Management Association) office to be briefed on scientific procedures for the Reef Check surveys we will be completing over the next few days. We conduct these surveys to provide data to scientists and marine park managers to help determine the state of the reef. After the briefing, students enjoyed some time ashore and then returned to the boat for lunch. The Marine Rangers brought their dive boat alongside after lunch to take us on a practice survey dive, which went very well. Back aboard in the afternoon, students showered and relaxed, awaiting the “breakfast for dinner” that would be our evening meal. After dinner, it was time for a Marine Biology fish ID class and then a well-deserved sleep after a busy day.
