Location: St. Pierre, Martinique
We started the day early and were all onshore by 8 am to get in a bus and head for the base of Mont Pelee, the volcano that erupted 100 years ago, destroying the town of St. Pierre. All were on the trail, hiking up the steep trail by 8:30 am. The weather was perfect; it was very cool because of the height and winds, and though we spent most of the hike in the clouds, the high winds pushed them out periodically to reveal great views of the volcano and surrounding towns. After a couple of hours of hard work, we all met at the summit and shared sandwiches before heading back down. The winds near the summit were so strong that we felt like we were going to be blown off our feet. After the hike, most enjoyed a coke or an ice cream for the cafe at the base before heading back to St. Pierre for quick phone calls. The day ended with an MTE class on estimating position.
