Location: St. Lucia

Welcome to St. Lucia!

I started my day at the glorious hour of 12 am with watch team three as we made our passage from Dominica to St. Lucia. It was a 16 hour overnight passage. I loved sailing last night. It was much better than our last overnight passage when I discovered I am not “built differently” and do, in fact, get seasick (who would have thought). To prevent this, I had to humble up last night and take motion sickness meds, and it was a GREAT life not being seasick this passage. We saw the stars, which were so bright, and even got to see Martinique as we passed by it. It was interesting to see light pollution on an island from a distance. I even got to steer on the helm from 3-4 am, and it made me feel really cool. At 4 am, our watch ended, and we got to head to bed. Going to sleep on the passage: imagine a huge rocking chair that flings you back and forth around your bunk… or imagines going to sleep on a rollercoaster in universal. It’s a good time. I woke up around 10 (which was the 2nd time I got to sleep in a month) and was free until lunch at noon. During lunch, we all got together and got to unpack the saga that was last night’s voyage.

Now some exciting stuff- we are docked next to the “Below Deck” boat from tv! (Honestly, I did not know what this meant until my shipmates explained it to me, but it sounds so cool to say). The marina we are docked at in St. Lucia is so bougie- there are real bathrooms and everything. After lunch, we went to class, put the boat to bed (post-passage tasks on the boat like putting the sail covers on and coiling the lines), changed our sheets, then once we were all cleared, Kelly and I BOOKED it to get ice cream. We appreciated the shore for a bit- bought some snacks, got to walk around on a space larger than 88 feet, and made it back in time for dinner at 6. Sarah made enchiladas for dinner, and they were so good. Now everyone is cleaning up (and singing aggressively loudly while doing so), and Kelly, Savana, and I are going to try our best to get more ice cream before they close tonight.

Signing off,
Rae C
