Location: Sardinia

Yesterday we left
Due east to Sardinia
Sail across the Med

An eventful night
With lots of boats and traffic
No wind and quite hot

Moonset and sunrise
Both equally beautiful
Both the same inverse

A calmer morning
Some traffic and glassy seas
But still there’s no wind

Eat enchiladas
And then oceanography:
life and habitats

Yet there’s still no wind
So throttle back and heave to
Take PFDs off

Everyone jump!
Mediterranean swim
two thousand meters

Sea glass smooth and cool
It breaks the oppressive heat
Devil ray fly-by

Salps and ctenophores
Baby fish and copepods
Plankton: field of dreams

Carolyn Anne weeps
For all the cute tiny things
Put them in the fridge

The world stays sky flat
Timeless passing of hours
Let’s stay til dinner

Gigi sees it first
What’s the white thing over there?
The ray has come back!

It crosses our stern
Waving to us like a dog
Pilot fish leading

It swims back and forth
How can you not fall in love
With childlike joy

Makes a break for it
Trying to burrow in air
As it says goodbye

The evening unwinds
Porcelain sea and matte sky
Time begins to flow

Two days yet to go
Before we reach Italy
Trap the day in ink
