The day officially started off around 1100 with watch team one in the cockpit busting out some moves and jamming to some music. During the dance session, Jack, Annie, and Duncan were in the galley cooking lunch. Lunch was pancakes with accommodations for all dietary restrictions. Most of the crew was below deck when the fire alarm went off. Eventually, people started to trickle up onto the deck with their type one PFDs and their Gumby suit. Those who were already up on deck were instructed to not go back down to retrieve their safety equipment. Instead, students that were already below deck were tasked to grab all the other PFDs and Gumby suits. Eventually, everyone meandered up on deck to the cockpit except for Gigi, who was in the middle of a refreshing shower. After we determined that everything was fine, we all headed back down below deck to put away our safety gear, continue cooking, and prepare for the day. After a little bit of waiting for lunch after the fire drill, we were beckoned above deck to the cockpit by the smell of some amazing pancakes. The pancakes were paired with a berry compote and some custard. After we had all enjoyed lunch and delivered our great thanks to the chefs, we went down below deck for classes. Todays classes consisted of Oceanography, our regular seamanship, and navigation master course.
Pictured to the left are some students, during their oceanography lecture, learning about seafloor features. Meanwhile, some of the 50-day voyage students were above deck, listening to music and standing watch. After the oceanography lecture, we had a short break before pulling out all the charts and navigation tools. Navmaster, as we call it, was quite the relief today, as it was the last day of new instruction. From here on out, it is just practice time. Soon came the end of classes. Some went to take a nap, some went to work on their literature reviews for oceanography, and some decided to enjoy some sun up in the cockpit. After what felt like a very short wait, it was already time for dinner.
After waiting some time for dinner, Duncan announced that he needed gophers to bring up the food. This is when the anticipation for dinner sets in. As pictured above, dinner was breakfast. For dinner, we had biscuits, eggs, bacon, and some homemade gravy. This dinner was also amazingprops to the chefs for the day. As skipper today, I was tasked with asking the squeeze question for the day. When we had all finished dinner, we all created a human chain link and went around the circle, answering the question of the day. Todays question, what is your definition of home, or what makes you feel at home. I decided on this question not only because I was curious about other peoples descriptions of the concept of home but also because I think that it is a great way for people to learn to trust each other by being comfortable enough to share something somewhat personal with others.
After dinner, but before we all finished our jobs for the day, we decided to call together everyone who had Carolyn cut a slit in their eyebrow for a picture. This all happened last night during watch team ones watch. What started with Gigi wanting a slit in her eyebrow multiplied into a group of nine other people that also wanted to hop on the trend. After a day full of exciting activities, we are ready to tuck into our warm bunks and get some needed rest before what is to come tomorrow.
