Location: Saba

This morning the crew woke up as usual and prepared for a day onshore the island of Saba. After going through a wet landing to get onshore, we hiked up a set of stairs known as “The Ladder.” It doesn’t sound that impressive but by the end of it most of the crew was already tired. We walked through Bottom Town to get to the base of the trail that would take us to the top of Mt. Scenery, the highest point in the Netherlands. As we began the hike, our fearless leader Faloon proceeded to tell us that the hike was no big deal and would only take about 45 minutes or so. Lies! We trekked up the mountain side, making our way through thick grass and mud, and getting bit by annoying little ants. We eventually reached the peak with the anticipation of seeing the view that the name of the mountain implied, only to find ourselves enveloped in clouds. After resting for a few minutes, we made our way back down the mountain to Windward Town completely exhausted. We relaxed in Windward Town, enjoying lunch, exploring, and visiting Jo Bean’s bead store where the crew bought souvenirs and made their own glass bead jewelry. We made our way back across the island to Bottom Town by hitchhiking in pickup trucks, which we all thoroughly enjoyed after a long day of hiking. Back on Ostar the crew got to swim and relax for and hour or two, laughing to ourselves and thinking, ” At least I can say I reached the highest peak on Saba.”
