Location: Taiohae Bay, Nuka Hiva, Marquesas, French Polynesia

Today was our free day on Nuka Hiva. Some went hiking up to a nearby point, and others went to the beach or just hung out around town. They celebrated Easter Sunday a bit differently the night before, blasting music until five am. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing “I’m Alive” by Cline Dion, booming from a Marquesan club, during my 11-12 anchor watch. So the town of Nuka Hiva was a little sleepy today, and not much was open except for one food van that I’m pretty sure all of us on shore went to at some point. At dinner, we celebrated Katie and Sophie’s 19th birthday! Happy birthday, girls, y’all are awesome! Perhaps the most educational part of the day took place during a marine science-inspired film about Chemical, Geological, and Physical Oceanography. The movie was “Giant Shark vs. Mega Octopus,” and I’m proud to say I own a copy of it at home. After watching a megalodon shark breach out of the water and chop into an air-born passenger plane, I leave you with these wise words “Don’t love the ocean too much it doesn’t love you back”- Giant Shark vs. Mega Octopus.
