Woooohooooo!!!!!!!!!! We had another wonderful day here in Bequia.
First and for most, because I know you are all wondering – LOGAN RICKS DID GET DIVE CERTIFIED. After many attempts, he has completed his course and is officially an Open Water Diver!!!! He would like to give a special shout-out to his left eardrum for finally letting him descend and complete the course.
Second of all. We had a great oceanography class today – though we’re not even halfway through the course, things are starting to come together, and we are starting to see how many things are interconnected in the ocean and why we see what we do (at least that’s the hope – from Sam, the person that teaches Oceanography). For example, today, we learned why the Caribbean has such good visibility for diving – due to its warm climate all year round, there is a permanent thermocline (rapid change in temperature) that stops colder, nutrient-rich water from reaching the surface. This leads to low nutrients at the surface and thus low amounts of “stuff” in the water (“stuff” aka phytoplankton needs nutrients to live/grow). So without phytoplankton in the water, we get super clear water!!! How neat is that?
After class, Willie, a local craftsman, came by to show us all of his fine crafts. People were very excited, and I think lots of necklaces and rings were purchased.
Then, we had sausage butties – I guess it’s a British take on sandwiches. Basically, there wasn’t any sandwich meat on Bequia, so we went with sausages. I, however, got halloumi, which is the most delicious GF/veg sandwich sub. It’s like adult string cheese. Shout out to Doris – the fancy food lady, for stocking halloumi all the way on this tiny little island.
After lunch, the group went to the beach for some leadership beach games – we love a good leadership class on the beach. First up was Magnetic Feet, a game that requires all participants to move as a single unit – their feet must stay connected. It is quite the challenge, and as Ash says, it usually ends in some bickering. However, reports are that today’s challenge went quite well! Yay teamwork! It’s what makes dreams happen!
Then they tried Eyes, Body, Mouth, my personal favorite. One person gets to be the eyes, one the mouth, and one the body. And the whole unit must work together to go collect different water bottles strategically placed across the field (sand). Communication is key – and spectating is hilarious. Sam went two steps to the left. And then two steps to the right. And then two steps to the left again. Stefi came up with some unique signals. Maxime and Tate went for the full crawl and sweep. Sophie missed just about all the bottles by thisssssssss much. But ultimately, the Orthodox Ventriloquists took the W. Or maybe, Ash took the W because he got to watch and record it all.
We came home to a lovely dinner and then a squeeze. Tonight’s question was a little different. I had everyone bring one item of importance to them to squeeze and then tell us about it. My item was Mr. Bowtie Jr – a small penguin in an abominable snowman outfit with a piece of string tied on as a bowtie. Mr. Bowtie Jr is from my little sister, and I love him. Thanks, Mia!!
That’s all for now. Thanks for stopping by!
