Location: Underway to Nuka Hiva

Once again, we have good news from the Seamester Fishing Team aboard Vela. After a passage of snapped lines and lost lures, we got some scores. Today, we redeemed ourselves after yesterday’s performance, losing a really beautiful Yellowfin Tuna just a second before I could get my hands on it. We decided not to gaff it aboard, it was a 30-40 pounder, but as we were raising it up from the water, the fish smacked the transom and came off the hookbig disappointment. Yesterday wasn’t all a failure, because the fellas reeled in a nice Skipjack while I was writing my exam. Around the same time, around 5:20, 2 hours before I wrote this, we got a bite and rushed up to feel a pretty heavy load on the line, but not much fighting. We could see about 300 yards out what looked like a small fish, planning on the surface. Maya L got on the rod and reeled it in, followed by Henry, Jake, Jay, Ben, and me. We got it real close to see it was a good-looking fish, then I got down, against my nerves, to pull up the line by hand. I was thinking It was gonna suck so bad if it gets off like yesterday, but I got it safely aboard. We took a look to see it was a real fat Skipjack, to which we named Maya, before Jake came down and knocked it out with the club. Ben, Henry, and I filleted it, and tomorrow I’m gonna sear the steaks in sesame oil, then dish it out with soy sauce and rice, maybe. Regardless, we, the crew of Vela, have enjoyed a steady supply of Tuna, and more is yet to come. Personally, I’m really jonesing for Dorado, but I’m not complaining with the scores we’ve been ripping in. I’ll drop some pics in there too.

Anyways, I think every day I’m the Crew Skipper, I come out and have some good news to tell y’all. On Monday evening, we intersected the same longitude that my home in Coronado is, which is really fun as I got to take some pics with the compass with some inappropriate gestures to my boys back home. As I’m writing, our coordinates are (S 10* 56.637′ / W 126* 24.6′). We are about 5-6 days out from Nuku Hiva, and I’m already prepared for my phone to blow up from the guys and Maya, who hopefully still has her new Audi, unscathed. I have my doubts 🙂 Anyways, with Maya, the Goat Canyon Trestle hike is really awesome, but we should also try to get out to the Colorado River, cause we can drop in canoes at the base of the Hoover Dam, and I know a really cool secret camping spot a couple miles downriver with hot springs and cliff jumping. Also, I just love it there.

What’s up, Doctor Jim? We’ve been doing real nice on the fishing. I was wondering if we’re gonna be able to take the rod back home? Maybe I can carry it on the plane back, but Idk, it’s a really nice one. Anyways, I’ve been having a really amazing time out here, and being on the ocean is just really, really cool. I’ve come to like the night watches, the shooting stars, and the satellites passing overhead are really cool. While we’ve been sailing, there have been times when the closest people to us have been in orbit, which is wild.

Looking forward to hanging out in Tahiti with mom Sophie and you, and maybe you’ll bring the dog along Anyways, love y’all and love to Nanny and Papa as well.

Sophie, now that you’re turning 21 in a couple of days, I spy the beginning of a beautiful partnership. Keep me posted and keep jonesing. Pour a box combo out for a brother in this piece.
