Location: Underway to Nuka Hiva

Today was a beautiful morning at sea with no land in sight. We did, however, see an interesting-looking vessel on the horizon during watch team 1’s watch this morning. It took us a while trying to figure out what it was, but before we knew it, it was out of sight. Not much later, we also spotted some whales, AGAIN! Yesterday, it was Pilot whales. Today, it was a big pod of Sperm whales that was moving through. They were beautiful and calm. We saw lots of spouts, and one lucky fluke!! For lunch, we had some yummy fresh veggie salad, chicken, and peri-peri potatoes. Afterwards, we settled back into our passage class-time routine. In oceanography class, we reviewed our last exam (on which I was quite pleased with how the class did). There were some hilarious and awesome leadership presentations given as well. Later on watch, some of the students also worked on collecting data for their group projects. For dinner, we had cane-style bowls with fried chicken and coleslaw. James smashed the sauce out of the park. Today is our chief mate Claire’s birthday, and we all sang to her, students wrote cards, and made signs. And, of course, her favorite cookies were baked as well. All in all, we’ve had a blessed first 24 hours of passage, it’s off to a great start, and we can’t wait to see what the rest brings.
