[Flish – a commonly used slang term for flying fish]
Watch team one had the 4-8 this morning, my personal favorite. I was watch team leader today. We thought it was just an ordinary watch until the flish. I came downstairs to make some breakfast and found Will and Gavi in the galley. All of a sudden, Gavi exclaims, “Flying fish in the salon! Flying fish in the salon!” repeatedly. We thought he was joking at first until he emerged from under the table holding a flying fish in his hand. We all jumped up and down and said, “Flying fish in the salon!” After telling the rest of our team what we had witnessed, I heard Will yelling about a flying fish again on deck. I rushed to the bow and saw not only a flish but Gavi holding up a baby squid with a grin, and Will dancing around him. All we could say was “Squid on the boat! Squid on the boat!”
Naturally, after our experiences, I wrote a rap titled Chud Flish Drip. (and song creds to martn) Unfortunately, I will not be putting it in this blog, but it is now watch Team One’s anthem. The sunrise was pretty this morning. There is a big seabird that’s been at the bow for a while now, and it might not be able to fly back at this point since we are so far away from land. After watch, we showered, did homework, and mostly slept until lunch. Today, our head chef was Cason (aka Queso) himself. We had quesadillas for lunch and mac and cheese for dinner. In the afternoon, we had a fire drill as well as Nacho and Aidan’s classes. Will, Cason, and Jonas (although he abandoned them) gave us a lovely presentation on leadership, including a demonstration of a tree growing. After class, we had a dog watch and almost had to send Shane up the mast!
When asked who his successor would be if he didn’t make it back, he, without hesitation, told us it would be me. We danced as we watched a squall approach us and darken the sky. We braced for impact, but by a miracle, the rain didn’t hit until watch team 2 replaced us. We served dinner downstairs and ate quickly upstairs in our foulies to avoid getting poured on. After dinner, the PSAT students took a big exam, and everyone crowded the salon trying to finish our third fish ID logbooks. I was going to write this blog after, but I fell asleep, so I’m writing it now (12-4 am watch). I’m pretty tired and can’t think of what else to say. Enjoy the pictures.
