Location: Passage to Bonaire
Barreling down toward Bonaire under just the main, forward staysail and jib. The fore staysail and flying jib await repair in Bonaire. In the meantime, the main staysail was reefed and moved forward to be bent onto the forward stay. The reason is that with the full main up and only a jib left up forward, if we were to raise the main staysail as usual, we would be fighting incredible amounts of weather helm with so much sail area aft. With the main staysail up forward tucked behind the jib and the full main aft, we were speedily slipping through the water towards Bonaire. We left with plenty of time from Dominica to add in some bonus sail training. When we were about a day out of Bonaire we practiced heaving to and tacking. Most of us enjoyed the extra bit of sail training while others were trying to wrap their heads around moving away from our destination. The day was capped off by one last tack at midnight before we set our last course for Bonaire to make it to the dock on time. What a day! Until next time.
